Nellie Melba

Actually, Helen Mitchell. She studied piano at first then singing after her
marriage to Charles Armstrong. Appeared in London in 1886. Studied in Paris with Mathilde Marchesi and made first
stage appearance at the Théatre de la Mannaie in Brussels,
1887 then in Paris,
1889. Appeared at Covent Garden, London
in 1888, Russia in 1891 and Italy
in 1892.
Retired in 1926 returning to Australia.
Awarded D.B.E. 1918 and G.B.E. 1929.
