Heinrich Soussman
Born in Berlin on 23rd January 1796, Soussman composed much music for the flute including a
Grosse Praktische Flötenschule
Op.53 (1839).
As a member of a German
infantry regiment band he was wounded in the 1813-1814 campaigns against France but by
1816 he had a position as flautist in the Royal Chapel, Berlin.
In 1836 he settled in St. Petersburg and was
appointed first flute at the Imperial Theatre, becoming Musical Director a few
years later.
Glinka is reported to have
said that, “Soussman was undoubtedly one of the best,
if not the best player in Europe”.
