Der Froschkönig – The Frog Prince

Aus den „Hüttenmärchen“ des Bruders Grommel

German version:

English version:

The Frog Prince

From Brother Grumble’s Furry Tales

Once upon a time there was a princess who had nothing better to do than play with her gold balls in the dark wood behind the palace. There was a frog there who grumbled quietly to himself “Oh yes, there she is again, that good-for-nothing…”

Suddenly one of the balls fell into a bottomless well and the princess, like a well brought-up upper-class young lady, swore, howled and stamped her feet.

“You think you’ve got problems”, thought the frog, “how you’d howl if you’d been put under a spell like me.” But he didn’t say that out loud, because he knew very well what was in his interest. You see, he was hoping to get something out of it. So he made the following suggestion to the princess:

“Gracious princess”, he said, “how would it be if I were to recover the ball for you?”

“Wow!” thought the princess, “a talking frog! That could be much more valuable than a gold ball”.

So she quickly grabbed the frog with both hands and stuffed it into a supermarket bag (obviously, she always carried these bags around with her, so she didn’t have to pay for new ones at Aldi, not because she was some kind of ecological “saint”!).

“But, princess”, cried the frog “what are you doing?”

“Yeah, yeah” laughed the princess “carry on talking; you’ll make me a fortune!”

The king saw all this through his telescope from afar, but he couldn’t do a thing. He was well aware that the frog had been bewitched and that it was really a prince, but the princess didn’t hear her father calling her. She drove off to town and sold the frog to the circus for a load of gold balls.

And so the talking frog hopped unhappily ever after round the circus ring and the gracious spinster Princess still plays with her balls in the wood.
