The North-West Composers Association was formed in response to an initiative from the Composers Guild of Great Britain who were celebrating their 50th anniversary year. Composers were contacted from the North-West and invited to be part of a new association formed to promote and develop contemporary British Music in the North-West region.

Seeding funding was provided by the Composers Guild of Great Britain and sponsorship from the T.S.B. bank.

Founder members, were Mr Colin Bayliss, Mr David Forshaw,  Mr David Golightly, Mr Geoffrey Kimpton, Mr Kevin Malone, Mr Brian Setter, Mr Stuart Scott, Mr David Solomons, Ms Joanna Treasure, Mr Jeremy Pike, Mr Thomas Pitfield, and Mr Steve Plews. The first meeting 10th of April 1994 and subsequent meetings were held each month in the home of the elected chairman Mr David Golightly.

Projects developed included a number of concert series introducing, high profile performers to the music of North-West members. Recording projects developed in partnership with ASC records. The inventive “Adopt a composer” scheme and compositional workshops for schools.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and expertise of the members, the North-West Association has grown into a vibrant powerful voice for composers and a model for similar organisations throughout the country.
