One all-embracing feature characterises the work of Malone: postmodernist play.

Having abandoned high Modernism, Malone found a more personal and honest expression in freeing the cultural baggage of serious High Art Music without actually throwing away the bags.

For example, his recent commission from the Brighton Festival, "Remote Control", positions JS Bach's influence in modern society; thus, two amplified harpsichords, computer-processed sounds and audience-interactive devices all merge into a fantastical carnival of sound, style and social critique.

"Three Ancient Nightclubs", commissioned by Psappha, questions the traditions of presenting music in concert halls (including a mock robbery of the box office takings), while his most recent commission from the Kiev XIth Int'l Music Festival 2001, "MoDem" for two violins, is based on the sound of a computer modem and subsequent internet surfing activities.

Malone is Lecturer in Composition at the University of Manchester Music Department, where he also runs the three electronic music studios and lectures in experimental and postmodern music. He gained two music degrees in America and a PhD in Composition from Goldsmiths' College.

His music has been described by The Independent as "witty, with a rare ability to communicate quite complicated processes with clarity."
