22 improvisations (or improvizations, if you prefer)

On itunes

[01] First impro  on itunes

Bells provide an ostinato, bass string sounds provide a countermelody and the vocal samples (of my voice) provide the main melody with some vocal backing filling in the harmony

[02] Cheng 3  on itunes

Oriental sounding electronic improvisation with up and down sweeps on the gu-cheng (Chinese zither) and melodic phrases and glissandi on glass harmonica, bass flute, gu-cheng and guitar.. in a second section the instruments come together for a parodies of a courtly dances and a folk dances

[03] Cheng 6  on itunes

Sweeps and twiddles on the chinese zither (Gu-Cheng) mixed in with temple bells, vocal scraps of melody (live countertenor track), following a mode which crosses the oriental and the middle eastern. Makes some use of the bending of notes typical of the Gucheng

[05] Impro 11 3 90   on itunes

Melody on crumhorn samples accompanied by arpeggiato guitar, instruments change to higher crumhorn and glass harmonica, then to countertenor vocal sample with atmospheric flute, then an ensemble with whistle on top and so forth. The same tune throughout with modal variations.

[06] impro 24 3 90  on itunes

Mysterious mix of electronic samples and live harmonics on classical guitar with an ostinato underlying theme, followed by a lightening of the atmosphere and ethereal vocal and harp-like samples, then the two ideas merge and the guitar plays both natural and harmonic notes.

[07] Strange String improvisation  on itunes

Impro with clarinet, cello and guitar samples providing an accompaniment in a spiky offbeat underlay tune and a  strange violin sample providing a main melody

[08] Airhorse - a fractal impro  on itunes

Mysterious meanderings on a sample halfway between tubular bell and guitar and a melody line provided by oboes. The piece is based on a midi interpretation of a fractal image called airhorse. Some of the underlay lines go into very fast phrases as the piece progresses but the oboe remains placid

[09] Spider - a fractal impro  on itunes

Piano, xylophone and bell samples follow the fractal contours of the spider fractal. This spider is not so much spinning a web as rushing madly round her old web in search of imaginary prey, which keeps ringing its bell. The fast piano phrases represent her mad and possibly comical search

A jolly and whimsical impro using flute, gucheng (chinese zither) and glass harmonica samples

[11] Bagpipe Music - after the poem by Louis MacNeice  on itunes

Improvisation originally intended to accompany the poem Bagpipe music by Louis MacNeice. This is the instrumental-only version but it follows the rhythms of the poem using bagpipe and glass harmonica samples and somewhat kooky percussion
