VERNON HARRIS

Born 1898     Died 1966.

Pupil of Vincent Needham.

Harris became a professional player in the 1920’s after having served an apprenticeship in engineering. He played winter seasons at Hastings,

summer seasons at Harrogate and later with the Spa Orchestra, Scarborough under Alick Maclean.

He was principal flute in the Hallé and BBC Northern Orchestras 1935-43 and of the new BBC Northern Orchestra 1943-51.

Vernon Harris was a fine player with a good technique who always paid much attention to his personal sound quality. Following his departure from the BBC in 1951 there came a long period of ill health but he did play an odd season at Bridlington before his death in 1966.
