Biography
Alan Edward Williams was born in Manchester in 1970, and studied composition at Edinburgh University
with Nigel Osborne and Peter Nelson, Manchester University with Geoff Poole and John Casken, and at the
Liszt Academy in Budapest with János Vajda. He was awarded the degree of PhD in composition by the
University of Manchester in 2000. His music has been performed and broadcast by some of the UK's leading
ensembles, including the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Singers, Psappha, the Lindsay String Quartet, the
Philharmonia and the choir of Clare College, Cambridge. As well as composing, Alan is also one of the
leading researchers in Britain on Hungarian contemporary music and culture. He is currently Senior
Lecturer in Music at the University of Salford, and lives in Delph, Saddleworth with his wife Justine and
son Eden (b.16th August 2002) and daughter Iris (b. 3rd March 2004).
